Rapture
1 Thes. 4:13-18
“13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.”
Millennium – First and Second Resurrection
Rev 20:4-6:
“4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They[a] had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.”
John 5:21, 24-30
“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it…
Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.”
- 1st and second resurrection John 5:21-29 Who and what are raised in the 1st resurrection? The souls of the saints, not the bodies of the saints. Rev. 20:1; Eph. 2:4-7 This is the new birth, a spiritual resurrection that began during Jesus earthly ministry (the time now is). The lake of fire has no power over these saints, many who will be martyred during this time. 2nd resurrection is the physical resurrection. Lake of fire (second death) has power over those not in the book of life. No indication of time when this will happen except after Christs’s return.
- 1st resurrection = spiritual
- 2nd resurrection = physical
- 1st death = physical
- 2nd death = spiritual (“lake of fire”)
