The last book of Moses (Deuteronomy) shares a common thrust with the last letter of Paul (2 Timothy): they both place great weight on God’s people saturating and inundating themselves with the written Word of God, Scripture. I believe this was because they, through God’s Spirit, saw Scripture as a leader and mentor that superseded their own leadership. Through Scipture, you are led by God Himself:
“I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts.“ Psalm 119:99-100
Specifically look at how both books push us on an individual, household, and community level to read and meditate on Scripture (with the clear inference that we are to obey it and treat it as God’s very word):
- You: Deut. 17:14-20 / 1 Tim. 4:16; 2 Tim. 2:15; 3:10-17
- Your house: Deut. 6:4-15 / 1 Tim. 3:4-5; 5:14, 17
- Your church and community: Deut. 31:9-13 / 1 Tim. 4:6-16
