Summary:

  • Paul gives temporary instruction for Timothy to “guide” the Ephesian church into health and maturity.

Insights:

  • The letter anticipates Timothy to be there, and exert his leadership, for only a limited time period (1:3; 3:14; 4:13; etc.)
  • 3:15 – Paul wrote “how one ought to behave in the household of God”, yet so far he has focused mainly on (1) prayer, (2) leadership roles.  Perhaps, in God’s economy, as long as you have that down, the rest will follow suit quite nicely.

For Brian to obey:

  • Don’t assume things of those I disciple (it strikes me that Timothy–after being called for this task and a companion of Paul–needs to be taught such fundamental things about the church)
  • Look to pass on my ministry to others (like Timothy) so I don’t need to be directly involved at all times.
