Review:
–Romans 1: Gospel is power for salvation. In contrast, sin keeps us from recognizing/knowing God, thus earning us condemnation (i.e. God’s wrath).
–Romans 2: We must obey perfectly (be 100% righteous) or die; God’s standard is the law and He is the perfect Judge. No one is righteous so we all deserve death. All have a standard – even Gentiles have unwritten law on their hearts (knowledge of good and evil).
–Romans 3: God is God of all and we can never and will never earn his salvation. Instead, it comes by grace through faith in Christ.
–Romans 4: Abraham’s faith in resurrection made him righteous, not his circumcision (or any other work besides faith). Circumcision was the seal and sign – the “stamp” – that he was in covenant and had already received God’s promises, not the means by which he received the promises.
Romans 5
:1- Summing up that we are made righteous by our faith just like Abraham was and this allows us to be at peace with God. Without the Cross we would still be enemies with God
(vs 9-10, 8:31)
:2- rejoice or boast in hope of the glory of God because of the grace we have been given
:3-5 rejoice even in our sufferings because of what it leads to
suffering –> perseverance (endurance) –> character –> Hope
(Phil 3:10, I Pet 4:12) (Luke 21:19, II Thes 1:4, Heb. 10:36, 12:1, James 1:3, I Pet 1:6, II Pet 1:6)
:5- Love of God poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (fruit of the Spirit)
:6-11-review/reminder of Romans 1-3 that we are sinners under God’s wrath but are then justified by the blood and saved from God’s wrath through the death of Jesus. We are reconciled back to God and rejoice in that truth.
:12-14-sin and death entered the world through one man, Adam, and death spread to all of us since we all sinned. Even without the Law, sin reigned; the Law simply made the people conscious or aware of their sin (Romans 2) Adam a foreshadow/type of Christ
