Chapter 1

  • Para 1: New generation repents where their ancestors didn’t.
  • Para 2: Vision – Israel was judged; will now be restored (and oppressors judged)

Chapter 2

  • Para 1: God’s glory will return to Israel: abundant life
  • Para 2: From Babylon and elsewhere, God is bringing his people back to their land
  • Para 3: God is on the move

Chapter 3

  • Para 1: The High Priest (Joshua) becomes clothed with God’s righteousness
  • Para 2: High Priest walk faithful; they signify Messiah; forgiveness/peace given in 1 day

Chapter 4

  • Para 1: Lampstand/church – build/completed by Holy Spirit
  • Para 2: Zerubbabel will complete the temple, though seems impossible
  • Para 3: Lampstand/church helped by 2 anointed ones and God’s wisdom

Chapter 5

  • Para 1: Thieves and liars are consumed by God’s curses
  • Para 2: Wickedness captured by God
  • Para 3: Wickedness transported to Shinar (Babylon)

Chapter 6

  • Para 1: Vision of 4 horses signifying God’s control of the nations
  • Para 2: High Priest given authority to build temple: symbol of Messiah
  • Para 3: Those far away will help build temple

Chapter 7

  • Para 1: People inquire whether they should fast as they did in Babylon
  • Para 2: God to people: “you aren’t fasting (or eating) for Me”
  • Para 3: God: “I judged Israel when they refused to listen to Me.”

Chapter 8

  • Para 1: God will re-establish Jerusalem in peace
  • Para 2: God to Israel: “Be strong now, my words will come to pass.”
  • Para 3: Be good and truthful
  • Para 4: Your fasting will become feasting
  • Para 5: Many nations will come to Jerusalem to seek God

Chapter 9

  • Paras 1-2 (vv. 1-8): Surrounding nations judged/destroyed by God
  • Para 3 (vv. 9-13): In peace, Messiah will establish victorious kingdom
  • Para 4 (vv. 14-15): God will be a warrior for Jerusalem
  • Para 5 (vv. 16-17): God will be savior/provider to Jerusalem

Chapter 10

  • Para 1 (vv. 1-2): Seek God, not idols, and He will provide
  • Para 2 (vv. 3-5): God to become shepherd/captain of Israel
  • Para 3 (vv. 6-7): God: “I will bring back Israel (to greatness)”
  • Para 4 (vv. 8-12): Israel will return from other nations

Chapter 11

  • Para 1: God’s judgment on shepherds
  • Para 2: God releases protective hand on sheep; they slaughter themselves
  • Para 3: Zechariah as prophetic shepherd – discord with other shepherds, finally gives up
  • Para 4: God raises up foolish shepherd over Israel

Chapter 12

  • Para 1: Days will come where God makes Jerusalem victorious over other nations
  • Paras 2 & 3: Judah & Jerusalem will have God’s strength in them
  • Para 4: God will give Judah/Jerusalem repentance, awareness of sin, pleas for mercy

Chapter 13

  • Para 1: Day of cleansing/forgiveness for Jerusalem
  • Para 2: Idols and false prophets will then be removed from the land
  • Para 3: All will resent false prophets/prophecies
  • Para 4: False shepherd will be struck; sheep scatter – ⅔ fall away; ⅓ refined

Chapter 14

  • Para 1: Jerusalem attacked; God fights back
  • Para 2: On that day, evening will become light
  • Para 3: On that day, living waters will continually flow from Jerusalem
  • Para 4: On that day, God will be only king on earth
  • Para 5: On that day, all earth a plain, but Jerusalem exalted
  • Para 6: God will plague those at war with Jerusalem with rotting
  • Para 7: God will plague nations with panic and fear
  • Para 8: Survivors will continually worship God in feast of booths
  • Para 9: On that day, all of Jerusalem will become holy to the Lord
