Introduction to this study:

The following study focuses on the Hebrew words used in Dan. 9:24-27, and compares them to the Hebrew used in the rest of the book of Daniel.  It also (on rarer occasions) compares the English translation of the Hebrew of Dan. 9:24-27 in the ESV with the english translation of the Aramaic parts of Daniel in the ESV.

The study begins with the conclusion and works backwards.

Summary of the study:

The portrait of Messiah drawn in these verses largely borrows the wording and concepts from 2 people/events: (1) The Babylonian captivity and subsequent deliverance by Cyrus (as is the subject of Daniel 9); (2) The attacks of Antiochus Epiphanes on the Jews and their temple (as is prophesied in Dan. 8 and 10-12, and fulfilled c. 170-150 B.C.).  In both people/events, there are some things typical of Messiah, and other things drawn as purposeful contrasts.  For instance, Cyrus delivers the Jews after 70 years, which is a type for Messiah delivering the Jews after 70 times 7 (490) years.  Or, Antiochus destroyed a “prince of the covenant” (11:22), whereas, by contrast, Messiah (“The Prince of the covenant”) will destroy Antichrist (of whom Antiochus is a type).   And so on.

Overview:

VerseScriptureInterpretation based on Daniel word-study
9:24Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. Within 490 years, the Jews/Jerusalem will:  be done with sin — In c. 170 B.C., called the “time of the end” (8:17), on account of Israel’s sin (8:12), the daily sacrifice was taken away.  Also, on account of Antiochus’ sinfulness, the temple was destroyed (8:13).  In contrast, on account of Messiah’s righteousness, sin will be finally finished, God’s judgment lifted over Jews/Jerusalem, and God’s temple will be sanctified through Messiah.be atoned of iniquity – represents ultimate atonement of Jews for all of their sin (service of babylonian captivity is type of this atonement/covering to recompense for some of their sin) have everlasting righteousness — in contrast to temporary righteousness, everlasting righteousness only happens within the kingdom of God; this kingdom began at Jesus’ baptism, but was established at his crossseal both vision and prophet — the culmination of all things foretold will happenanoint a most holy place — God’s people and place will be anointed with His Spirit
9:25Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. Messiah will build Jerusalem again (in contrast to when it was built before Babylonian captivity).Antiochus would destroy the “prince of the covenant” (11:22), but, in contrast, this Prince of the covenant will destroy Antichrist. There will be 434 years (starting 49 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem) where Jerusalem will continue to be rebuilt.  The city will be built well (with squares and moat), but it will come at a great cost
9:26And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war.Desolations are decreed. As the stone was cut out who would begin God’s kingdom (2:34, 45), so Messiah will be cut off, and left totally bare and alone. It is certain that Messiah’s people will destroy the city and temple of Jerusalem thoroughly and overtly, in war.
9:27And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.Messiah will establish God’s covenant with many people for seven years. After 3.5 years, Messiah will put an end to the Jewish sacrifices and offerings. The destroy of the temple will be in the covering/wing/extremity of uncleanness.  After the God-appointed period of time concludes, the person destroying the temple will receive God’s curses poured out on them, just as they were the one to pour God’s curses upon God’s people (think of Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, Antiochus, etc.–all instruments God used to bring cursing on his people, but who later received God’s judgment on themselves).
