This is my paraphrase of page 43-45 from Seiss J. A. (19–). The gospel in leviticus : or holy types ; a series of lectures on the hebrew ritual. Zondervan.

There once was a Roman governor who made the death penalty for a certain crime. Some people thought it was a bit harsh, and questioned if he would actually follow through on it. But then something happened that forever made everyone realize he was serious.

That’s because the first person to commit this crime was none other than the governor’s own son. The very son he raised and loved. What he did with his own son would show people if he really–REALLY–was serious.

Well, the governor had his own son executed for the crime. And thus everyone knew how serious he was. If the authority killed his own son for his sin, how could anyone think he wouldn’t exact the same punishment on them?

Now look at Calvary. God didn’t spare his Only Son. How dare any of us think we are off the hook. If we wonder how serious God could be, just look at whether He would sentence His only Son or not.

Well, He did sentence His one and only Son. And you can be sure He will sentence you with the same wrath and judgment. In fact, why should He not sentence us more? We are not his Son and we are the truly guilty parties.

This should put the fear of God in all of us. But also know that if (and only if) we place our complete trust in Christ and His sacrifice, then we will be spared God’s death sentence we deserve for our sins.

The great Lord asks, ‘Why will you die?’…Forgiveness, peace and life are within thy reach. Christ has been offered to purge away thy guilt. Embrace him then as thine, lest eternity should find thee in thy sins and in thy blood.
