You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean

Lev.iticus 10:10

Lev. 11 – Outside-inside (eating/touching animals)

  • Clean land animals: cloven hooves and chews cud
  • Clean sea animals: fins and scales
  • Clean birds: non-carrion 
  • Clean winged insects: jointed legs (key: v. 21)
  • All swarming things are unclean (key: v. 42)
  • 2 things perpetually remain clean:
    • “a spring or a cistern holding water” (v. 36; cf. John 7:38-39)
    • “any seed grain that is to be sown” (v. 37; cf. Luke 8:11) 

Lev. 12 – Outside-inside-outside (giving birth)

  • “If a woman conceives and bears…” (v. 2)
  • Male child: 7 days unclean + 33 days purified = 40 days unclean
  • Female child: 14 days unclean + 66 days purified = 80 days unclean
  • Burnt offering and sin offering

Lev. 13-14 – Inside-outside (on surface)

Leper Declared Unclean:

  • White hair in diseased area (on head/face, hair is yellow and thin – 13:29)
  • Disease deeper than skin
  • Spreading in skin (unless it’s completely white – 13:13)
  • Raw flesh in swelling
  • Result: Wear torn clothes, hair hangs loose, cover upper lip; cry out, “Unclean, unclean”; Live alone, outside the camp

Leprous Garment Declared Unclean (burn):

  • Greenish or reddish disease
  • Spreads

Cleansed Leper (if healed):

  • 2 live clean birds, cedarwood, scarlet yarn, hyssop
    • Kill bird in earthenware over fresh water
    • Dip live bird (and other elements) in blood, sprinkle 7 times
    • Free living bird in open field
  • Wash clothes
  • Shave off hair
  • Bathe in water
  • Enter camp, live outside tent for 7 days
  • Shave off hair on head, beard, eyebrows
  • Wash clothes
  • Bathe body in water
  • (8th day:) 2 male lambs, 1 ewe lamb, grain offering, log of oil
    • Guilt offering (male lamb) + oil = wave offering
      • Blood – right ear, right thumb, right big toe
    • Oil – sprinkled, right ear, right thumb, right big toe, head
    • Sin offering, Burnt offering, Grain offering

Diseased Houses

  • “I put a case of leprous disease in a house in the land of your possession” (Lev. 14:34)
  • Reddish, greenish spots // Deeper than the surface // Spread
  • Remove stones diseased, throw them into unclean place out of city
  • Scrape inside of house // replace stones → if disease persists:
    • Break down house

Lev. 15 – Inside-outside (beyond surface)

  • “…lest they die in their uncleanness when they defile My tabernacle that is among them” (15:31)
  • Bodily discharges
