Leviticus 8 – Preparing a Priest (“…so that you do not die,” – Lev. 8:35)

  1. Cleanse and cover
    1. All – water washing
    2. High Priest – robes, breastplate, turban, oil (cf. Ps. 133:2)
    3. Priests – coats, sashes, caps
  2. Sin offering (cf. Rom. 1-3)
  3. Burnt offering (cf. Rom. 6)
  4. Ordination/consecration offering (cf. Rom. 6)
    1. Right ear lobe, right thumb, right big toe 
  5. Filling the hands
    1. Fat, inner self, thigh
    2. Unleavened bread and oil
    3. Breast (waved by Moses)
    4. Burned atop burnt offering
  6. Oil and blood on priests/garments
  7. Eat of sacrifice; stay at entrance of tent (7 days)

Leviticus 9 – The 8th Day

  1. Moses (in presence of Aaron, sons, elders)
    1. Aaron
      1. “take for yourself…” (9:2) – sin and burnt offerings
      2. Israel
        • “Take…” (9:3) – sin, burnt, peace, grain offerings
        • The LORD/His glory appears (9:4, 6)
      3. Aaron makes sacrifice; sons present blood
      4. Lifted hands, blessed people
  2. Moses and Aaron – from tent of meeting, blessed people
  3. God’s glory appeared – fire, shouting, falling (9:23-24)

Leviticus 10 – Priestly Duties

  1. Nadab & Abihu – unauthorized fire -> death
    1. Cousins carried them from the camp
    2. Aaron and remaining sons – no mourning (“lest you die, for the anointing oil…is upon you” – 10:6,7)
  2. Priest’s duties: (A) discern clean vs. unclean; (B) teach Israel God’s word (10:8-11)
  3. Priests – eat grain offering; eat peace offering (with others); eat sin and burnt offering
