Leviticus Chap 5
Recap
- Burnt Offering – Jesus and the Cross
- Grain Offering – The resurrection of Jesus
- Peace Offering – The tearing of the veil
- Sin Offering – atonement of known and unknown sin
All of these are a constant reminder of our brokenness and desperate need for the Lord.
We cover these in depth and detail, knowing that heaven and earth will not disappear until the every detail of the law has been fulfilled [Matt 5:18]
Continuation of Sin Offering
Lev. 5:1
God places an extreme value on honesty. Not communicating the truth, when given the opportunity is equivalent to being complicit with falsehood.
*I believe* the end of the verse communicates that the punishment which would go to the prosecuted, would be put on the silenced informant. [Is. 53:5]
Lev. 5:2
- Not morally unclean, but ceremonially unclean.
- We are held accountable for sin, even when we don’t realize we sinned.
- Increasing expectation of fearful attention to the law of the King. Because we are not excused of unintentional touching of uncleanliness, we are held accountable. The Lord expects we take careful precision in holiness. [Jer 17:23,24] Had we listened and received correction, we could have avoided this.
- Imagine all of the things we know we’ve done wrong.
- Now imagine how many more we haven’t noticed!
- Thank God for Jesus, our perfect fulfillment.
Lev. 5:3
- Don’t delay in making peace with the Lord.
- As a culture, when dishonesty/trespass occurs, we often wait until things “settle”, in this verse, God demands quick restitution, for God does not want to be separate from us.
Lev. 5:4
- Don’t be thoughtless in oaths, promises, whether for good or bad.
- [Eccl 5:4] – foolishness to not complete vow or make thoughtless vow.
- 5:7 – Stand in awe of God, who CANNOT fail on his promises and vows!
- [Prov 10:19] Fun side thought – in studying lie detecting, one might look for an abundance of words and explanations as a give away for lying. People often over speak when they lie!
- [Eccl 5:4] – foolishness to not complete vow or make thoughtless vow.
Lev. 5:5
- Confess with his mouth. This is a vocal confession of wrong doing in which we join God in declaring sin is in fact, sin.
- Vocalization drags sin into the light, where it can be dealt with [1 John 1:7,9]
Lev. 5:6 – 12
- Payment necessary, but a sliding scale of sorts for the poor, so they could fully participate in the sacrifices.
- God not as concerned with sacrifice as he is with being at peace with the individual.
- v. 13 – Also taking care of the Priest.
- I did not go into great detail on this section as much was redundant to prior teaching on burnt sacrifice.
- I also did not understand the portion about the wringing of the neck of the birds and why that was significant.
- Ephesians 4 (notably verse 25) the Lord hates falsehood and it has no place in the Kingdom. It destroys unity and is directly opposed to the Truth.
- Guilt (trespass offering)
- Atonement of known and unknown sin requiring restitution of sorts.
- A cure or healing of problems caused to others by sin.
- A set of seemingly more grievous sin, as monetary restitution must also be made.
Lev. 5:15
- Sin against the Lord’s holy things.
- I would suggest that these things are set very close to the heart of the Lord. Less of religious objects but more concerning the type of actions the Lord expects in followers of him.
- Hatred of the brethren, unforgiveness of other’s sin, prejudice and bias (in the name of Christ no less) etc.
- I would suggest that these things are set very close to the heart of the Lord. Less of religious objects but more concerning the type of actions the Lord expects in followers of him.
Lev. 5:17 – 6:7
- Expectation of recompensing for the sin, along with an additional 20% of the value.
- Again paying close attention to the aspect of falsehood in a community of believers!
- The restitution was for the priest’s livelihood. As the priest was also representing the Lord, so since the sin was against the Lord, payment was made to him.
- I notice the weird break in chapters. Correct me if I am wrong on this.
- 5:1-13 are still concerning the sin offering.
- 5:14-19 and 6:1-7 are concerning the guilt offering, which is differentiated by both the need for further restitution and the sin specifically against God’s holy things.
Lev. 6:8-30
Lev. 6:8-30 recaps all of 3 prior offerings, except instead of the perspective of the person sacrificing, they are further instructions for the priests.
I didn’t do notes for verses 8-30. I assume there is plenty more revelation to be had from these recaps, but I did not include them in this portion of notes.
