I was recently reading the early chapters of Genesis, and I noticed some interesting parallels in Gen. 4 (the account of Cain) and Genesis 5 (the account of Seth). They may mean nothing more than similar names were used by close relatives and the number 7 figures itself in multiple ways. Both of these things are true enough in the Bible (as well as extra-biblically). But I also wonder if the Lord might be showing us something else here. I don’t know what. And thus write this to ask you all for insight as we seek His face together…
| Genesis 4 (Adam-Cain) | Genesis 5 (Adam-Seth) |
| 1st Generation: Adam | 1st Generation: Adam |
| 2nd Generation: Cain | 2nd Generation: Seth |
| 3rd Generation: Enoch | 3rd Generation: Enosh Note similar 3rd Generation names |
| 4th Generation: Irad | 4th Generation: Kenan |
| 5th Generation: Mehujael | 5th Generation: Mahalalel Note similar 5th generation names |
| 6th Generation: Methushael | 6th Generation: Jared Note similarity with Adam-Cain’s 4th generation (“Irad”) |
| 7th Generation: Lamech Lamech is the one who said if Cain is avenged 7 times, I can be avenged 77 times. Thus 7 and 77 are mentioned together. | 7th Generation: Enoch Note same name as Adam-Cain’s 3rd generation |
| 8th Generation: Methuselah Note similarity with Adam-Cain’s 6th generation (“Methushael”). Of course, you can also see a similarity with the 5th generation name (“Mehujael”). | |
| 9th Generation: Lamech Lamech lived 777 years. Note the similarity in 7-7-7 appearing in the 9th generation Lamech of Adam-Seth’s line and the 7th generation Lamech of Adam-Cain’s line. | |
| 10th Generation: Noah |
Any insights others can offer?
I’ve noticed the similarities between the two lines as well, but couldn’t see any real typological or prophetic reasons. So I just pretty much ascribed this to overlapping familial connections. Perhaps there’s more but I’ve not seen anything of significance thus far although I haven’t really done an in depth study on this.
