Peace Offering

Lev. 3:1-17; 7:11-36; 19:1-8; 22:21-25; 23:19; Prov. 7:14

  • Optional sacrifice, except on Pentecost (Lev. 23:19)
  • Only offering eaten by non-priests
  • Herd / flock (sheep/goat); Male / female
  • On top of Burnt Offering > fat (including tail), kidneys, liver lobe – “God’s food”
    • People don’t eat fat/blood
    • Breast and fat waved – breast for Aaron and sons
    • Right thigh for priest
  • 3 types (progressively less rigid):
    1. Thanksgiving –
      • With bread–oil + leavened bread (1 loaf for priests)
      • eat flesh on day offered
    2. Vow –
      • Bull or lamb can’t have longer/shorter parts
      • Eat flesh within 2 days
    3. Freewill –
      • Bull or lamb can have longer/shorter parts

Sin Offering

Lev. 4:1-5:13; 6:17, 24-30

  • Offered after someone sins
    • Anointed Priest → male bull // Whole congregation → male bull // Leader → male goat // Common Person → female goat/lamb (or 2 birds or flour)
    • Causes of sin offering:
      1. Withholds information publically asked for
      2. Touches uncleanness
      3. Makes rash oath
    • Atones/forgives (4:20, 26, 31, 35)
    • Gives “compensation” to the LORD (5:6)
  • Blood on veil, incense, burnt offering altar
  • Fat on top of burnt offering
  • Skin/flesh burned outside camp
  • Priest eats it inside the court (6:26)

Trespass Offering

Lev. 5:14-6:7, 17; 7:1-7

  • Trespass offering is subset of sin offerings (7:7)
  • Causes of trespass offering:
    1. Unintentionally sin against God’s holy things
      • Sin offering + ram (valued in silver) + 1 ⅕ restitution to priest
    2. Take goods from neighbor
      • Sin offering + ram + 1 ⅕ restitution to neighbor

Burnt (& Peace) Offering

Burnt Offering

  • Priest offering it may eat the skin
  • Fire/sacrifice remain all night
  • Ashes placed beside it (“holy clothes”) → ashes taken outside camp (“common clothes”)
  • Priest burns wood every morning > for burnt and peace offerings

Grain Offering

General Grain Offering
  • Eaten by priests offering it in the holy place
    • Other priests share food
High Priest Anointing – Grain Offering
  • Use 1/10 ephah fine flour
    • ½ offered/burned in morning
    • ½ offered/burned in evening
  • Fully burned, can’t be eaten by priests
